Selling Snacks at the CEESA Boy's Tournament
Student Council
It was QSIB's turn to host the boys' High School CEESA tournament at Lafranconi, so I volunteered to sell snacks on both Friday and Saturday. Mr.Yoder (the school) supplied the snacks, and our group was in charge of selling and keeping track of all the sales. The goods (water, snacks, fruit) were donated by QSI and the proceeds went to the High School Student Council (STUCO) that I am actively engaged in.
Evaluation
At times, it got hectic because of the large number of students as well as teachers and parents (especially on Saturday). By standing in the rough condition and selling goods to the people participating in or watching the game, I got a chance to handle the money and also talk and engage in conversation with the players as well as teachers and parents. I became fast friends with the st.Petersburg group, and we even showed them around town after the tournament with their host family. The challenge of this was to handle people standing in line, but also keep track of the orders and money (MATH!). Also, moving around the benches, tables, and food after the matches were over became challenging as well, but luckily there was more of us to help handle the weight. Overall, it was a great experience and I would love to volunteer for an activity like this again.
Goals
-Organise and keep track of the money gained/lost
- Be a better organiser in general
- Communicate with the students as well as the staff of the FTVS school that helped us store the goods
- Improve communication
- Communicate with my group

Since all students achieved their goals, a celebration was in order. We set out roles during one of the meetings, and me and my friend chose the movie day for the kids. We were to make and put popcorn in bags that we would later give out to the kids before the movie started and throughout. We were also in charge of the sound and switching between the 3 winter themed movies showing.
Reflection/Evaluation
The celebration was a success!
There were some obstacles, though. The kids were so excited about the popcorn they could get in school, that having one bag wasn't enough, so they tried to sneak past us to retrieve it. However, we caught (most of) them in time before they had too much.
By coming to all the meetings, I was committed to the activity that was going to happen, due to the various meetings of the Humanitarian Club and the people involved. We started planning and setting up the theater one period before the event began, just to be sure. I had to run around school, check on the popcorn, then go up and set up the chairs, then organise the popcorn into small bags. Sometimes, it became quite chaotic; however, we managed and the kids really enjoyed themselves, they even wanted to see more movies and eat more popcorn!
Reflection/Evaluation
I continued selling donuts for the rest of the school year, however, at the end it was only me. At first, it was challenging to manage both the selling, organising prior the selling, as well as buyind the donuts, but, at the end, I managed my time well enough that it worked out. I think that the donut sale became a staple event every week. When I was absent in school on the date of the donut sale, I always asked one of the STUCO members to sell the donuts instead of me, or I sold them the day I returned.

Food Drive
With the humanitarian club
Plan
I planned to collect the weights of the food brought by secondary 2 and secondary 3 classes every day for 3 weeks. It is an activity that is highly promoted by the Humanitarian club, so we all were as involved as possible. Also, at the end (every year) we collect the food and pack it up so it can be brought to the van and donated to charity.
Reflection/Evaluation
The food drive went better than we'd hoped, the Humanitarian club even had to add more space to the poster that measured the competition. I believe that due to the fact that it was a competition, the students saw it as something they can all accomplosh and all win a goal, not just one class. The calculations were that everyone should bring 3 kilos per person in their class, but some students from Elementary got so motivated, that they brought almost 10 kilos per person.
This was definitely a great way to help out the community and raise awareness of the global issue in a way that both the people got food (all the food the students brought was donated by the Humanitarian Club), but also the students got a fun period in their normal day, where they could play games and "chill out".
Bringing the food to school was sometimes a challenge, since it was a lot (I didn't want to bring it a few times during the month- so, one day I brought more), but eventually I managed. Keeping track of counting the food was sometimes a challenge, since I do not have a free period, my partner sometimes did it without me knowing, so I went to check the food and it was already gone; however, we managed and the food drive was successful.

Plan
I plan to buy donuts on Monday evening, and then sell them during break the next day (with my classmate). We want student council to profit, so we increase the price to 1 euro for each donut. I have been doing this for a year already, but now the challenge is going out and buying all the donuts, then putting them on a tray and taking them on the train with me, without damaging them.

Helping at a meeting/presentation
Plan
My friend's dad asked me to translate two speeches for him that he will present at a conference with many (around 150) representatives of various companies. I agreed with helping him, my plan is to translate his already created speech into English (that he will send to foreigners that could not attend the conference). Also, I was asked to help out the day of the conference. All I was told was that I will act like "an assistant" and talk to people etc. I was quite nervous to do this, as I can sometimes be shy with talking to older people I don't know and engaging in small talk is not what I am the best at. However, I agreed, feeling that it would be a nice challenge for me to accomplish.
| Working behind the booth at the beginning |
Reflection/Evaluation
The translation went well, I was finished earlier than I thought, even though I had to look up specific terminology. The conference, however, surprised me in a way that I did not expect to be responsible for all the things I was. While people came in, my "colleague" and I handed out 2 gift bags for each person, wrote their names, companies, and email, as well as gave them an iPad (not a gift - simply a loan for the activity). This proved to be challenging at times, as many people needed explaining on how to work the iPad. Also, we lead them to the conference rooms, making small talk along the way.
The day brought many surprises, especially in the number of overwhelming tasks our colleagues appointed us with. I completed every task, and at the end the "supervisors" appraised us for a job well done. During my time spent doing this activity, I became aware of the fact that, if I want to and I try, I can make small talk and make conversation with many different people, which is something I wasn't that comfortable with before.
Goals

Fulfill every task I was appointed with
Communicate and engage in conversation throughout

Selling Snacks at the Boys CEESA Tournament
Plan
I plan to help out with selling snacks at the boys CEESA basketball tournament where schools from all around Europe meet and play basketball against each other. The plan is to work the second shift during which I will sell snacks, while at the end we will clean up and give the money to the supervisor.
Reflection/Evaluation
I believe the event went very well and the booth was helpful in providing the players with snacks, however next time we sell snacks somewhere, I will try to make sure the prices are comparable to the prices in normal stores, due to the fact that many were complaining and even we noticed that the prices were too high. However, I went and asked one of the teachers if we can lower the prices, and she realised this as well and agreed. Also, I realised that next time we should supply the players with more nutritious snack bars etc. not just chips and croissants, which is something I will suggest the next time an event such as this comes up.
By selling and helping out at events such as these, I am starting to realise that I enjoy organising events and it might be something I would like to pursue in the future. This realisation is very helpful, because it is time I start making major decisions about the future, such as the universities I want to apply to.

- Organise and keep track of the money gained/lost as well as the amount of snacks
- Communicate with the students as well as the staff of the FTVS school

I plan to help the teachers during the playdate/easter egg hunt by hiding the eggs as well as entertaining and planning activities for the kids throughout in order to make their time enjoyable.
Reflection/Evaluation
I believe the afternoon went as planned - everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves, even us, the helpers. It was fun to interact with younger kids and their teachers for a change. The afternoon was much different than I expected, it was fun to talk to the teachers and help hide the easter eggs, especially when we saw how happy the kids were when they found one. I believe that the kids were very entertained, and I am happy that I helped out with the arrangements because it was a new activity for me that I found enjoyable.

- Entertain the kids
- Take care of cleaning up as well as hiding the eggs
- Set up the activities, movie, and pizza

Summer Internship at Valor
Plan

I applied for an internship at a startup investment company in Bratislava and I was offered one. My plan is to help out as much as possible without getting in the way, as well as absorbing new information about how the finance world works because it can potentially benefit me in my studies of HL IB Econ as well as finding out if I would enjoy doing something similar in my future, because it is almost time to be applying to university. I have never done something similar so it will be new to me, however, I am confident that I will be able to do the job because I find the order and inner management of companies interesting. I also enjoy organization and translating, which, as I was told, is something that will come in handy during my short time spent at Valor c.p.
Reflection/Evaluation
The internship was better than I could have imagined, I have learned and progressed within my tasks immensely. The internship has helped me realized how much of a team effort needs to be put into a functioning, successful company and how even relatively young people can accomplish so much within a short period of time.
Most days I spent on organizing client portfolios and helping out with different tasks such as speaking with the English speaking clients, being shown how their own developed stock system works (very interesting), as well as talking to each of my employees about their education, experiences throughout their lives, and more. Also, my English skills came to use due to the many translations of documents I had performed.
I finally realized that the financial world is not a world I would like to work and "breathe" in due to the many intrigues and long hours spent behind a computer, and of course, it involves a lot of Math, which is not a subject I enjoy at school as much as English or Psychology. I was happy to make that evaluation due to the fact that now I know that I will not be applying to universities with the aim of working in finance. The internship has helped me grow and slowly step into "adult shoes" of responsibilities and consequences for actions one takes.
- Become aware of my abilities (financial, organization - applying IB Econ into the real world as well as communication and adapting to a completely new environment with a group of all male, highly educated, adults)
- Be good at my "job" and don't let my bosses down
- Witness a different environment
- Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth (finding out whether jobs in the financial environment are something I would like to pursue in the future)
- Undertaking new challenges (I have never interned anywhere before)
- Working collaboratively with others (New team at a new company - working together for a month)
- Showing perseverance and commitment (Not giving up on the task, even if difficult/challenging)
- Developing new skills (Organization, perseverance, increased expertise in translation of legal documents etc.)

Math Olympiad Volunteering
Plan
The Math Olympiad is organized yearly at our school, however, I have never participated in volunteering at the event. This year I decided that I should help out with the organisation and with whatever tasks the organizers would need me to do (Undertaking new challenges). I do not really know what I am getting into, since every year the "tasks" change, and I did not have a preferred job I wanted to do, so I signed up for all of them. Also, I have time on Friday (the day before the tournament) so I told Mrs.King that I can help and show the students around Bratislava since it seemed fun.
Reflection/Evaluation
Friday before the event, I was to deliver food for the students as well as show them around, however, the school said that they did not need our help. I knew that some other student volunteers needed help with their school, since they did not really know their way around Bratislava, so I decided to help them. The day before, we collaborated on creating a "path" of where to go with the foreign students (Working collaboratively with others and Showing perseverance and commitment). The tour was a huge success, we showed the kids the amazing buildings Bratislava has to offer, and through our research learned some new things about the history as well.
Saturday morning, Bradley and I went to the hostel the students were staying in and helped them get to school using the tram. The ride went well, however, the school that I was assigned to were coming all the way from Budapest and were the last team to arrive. After a quick introduction, we went to the testing room where I explained all the rules and handed out pencils and scratch paper. Once everyone was settled in, they started. Throughout the day, one more written test was handed out and I delivered the snacks to the kids as well.
Even though at first it was challenging to learn what to do and when, once I understood how things worked, it was fun. Overall, the event went well and I learned a lot about the amount of effort and time that had to be spent on doing the activities and organizing an event for a large group of preteens and teens. I believe that everyone had a good time.
Goals
- Succesfully be helpful to the teachers, participants, and the organisator (Mrs.King)
- Show the students around Bratislava and make it entertaining
CAS outcomes
- Undertaking new challenges (I was never a part of the organizing group for such a big event)

Fall Festival Volunteer
Plan
As I have never participated in helping and volunteering for the fall festival that the PSG organizes, I decided it would be fun to try it out this year. I don't know what to expect, other than a lot of small kids!
I told the organisators that I could help with whatever they needed as well as set up before and after the event.
Goals
- Be helpful to the PSG organisators
- Make the activity fun for the kids that attend
- Manage my time well enough so I don't have to hurry home to do homework
Undertaking new challenges (Fall festival - new experience & activity)
Planned and initiated activities
Developing new skills (Interacting with the kids)
Consideration of ethical implications (Interacting with the different kids that performed the activity)
Reflection/Evaluation
I believe that the event went smoothly and kids enjoyed themselves.
The activity I was assigned to was mini golf. The children showed perseverance, however, we had to adjust the "hole" a little, as it was too difficult for various age ranges of the kids. At the beginning, when they went from far away, many kids became frustrated with the game and often yelled and were mad, however as I have previous childcare experience through interaction with my nieces and nephews, I realized that explaining that the task was hard to do for everyone was essential. Then, even if they did not score, but showed a lot of effort and got better, I gave them a candy from the candy bucket that was given to me by one of the PSG members.
I was assigned to the activity with another student, however, she was not present often, so I mostly ran the activity myself, which was OK as the kids went one by one and the tas was simple to explain.
I believe that I have accomplished the goals I set, as the whole event was a success and I helped the PSG set up the event prior to starting as well. I finished my assignments during my free periods that day, so I was able to enjoy myself as well and not worry about unfinished homework.
Although at times challenging, I became aware of the ethical implications of interacting with the children and witnessed firsthand the different types of reactions they had, especially when they were "losing" (did not score).
