Face Painting at International Brunch

Plan
I volunteered through humanitarian club to help paint faces for an hour at the international brunch held at our school on Saturday. We had to print some "options" for the kids to choose from during our shift. Eventhough at first I wasn't sure about if I should take the job or opt for something less challenging, like selling coffee, I felt that this challenge would help me develop a new skill.

My first attempt!

Evaluation
Face painting, which I have never done before, is completely different than normal paniting which I am used to. It definitely taught me how to interact with younger kids and keep them calm and happy for the time I had to paint a tiger, butterfly, or even a spider on their faces . At the end, we had a line of kids all wanting something else (but mostly tigers), so it was a lot but we managed to adjust to the situation and try to remain calm. My goal to develelop a new skill was achieved, face painting is hard work! From the sticky colors, to the designs, a lot is involved! Some of my creations

Trying a New Recipe!
Plan
I love baking and trying out new recipes, so when I realized I have never made normal chocolate chip cookies, I decided it was time to change that. So, one day after my French after school class, in the car I googled "chocolate chip cookie recipe" and  found a recipe for cookies with the metric system (which is great because I have misplaced my "American" measuring cups) on www.nigella.com (https://www.nigella.com/recipes/chocolate-chip-cookies). The recipe didn't seem hard, so I planned to go to the grocery store to buy all the supplies. Also, my plan was to share the cookies with my Math class the next day (but also have them for breakfast), so I made sure Ms.King was okay with me doing that during class time.
The ingredients I bought (some we had already, but some were bought)

Evaluation

I followed the method exactly, but somehow my cookies burned, and I also put them too closely together. I was worried about bringing them to school, even asking my friend if she thinks I should bring them or just quit all together. But, I decided that I am NOT a quitter, and the cookies did not taste as bad as you'd imagine when seeing them. I was surprised when all of my classmates (8 girls) and my teacher (Ms.King) really liked them, and even asked me to make more sometime. I learned, however, that 15 minutes is enough and that there is no need to push it to 20. Since my experiment was appreciate it, I plan on baking a new recipe and sharing again when Christmas comes!

Goals
- expand my "cooking portfolio"
- share my creation with my math class
- have a new challenge

CAS Outcomes
Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth (baking-time management)
- Planning and initiation (recipe-sharing)

Creating Posters for Student Council!

Plan
During our Student Council (STUCO) meeting, which we have every Tuesday during lunch, I volunteered to do the Halloween posters which lead to me creating the "First Friday posters" as well. I wanted to do something colorful, fun, and appealing to the whole school (not just the "big kids"). This would be a new challenge, because the students are so different. I also had a time I needed to be done with the posters, and usually it was "ASAP" (as soon as possible).  I've never done something like this before, so  I planned on doing it on one of the websites that offer poster making. After looking at them I realized that none of these appealed to me and what I wanted, so I reaserched more and decided to create my own while using some ideas from www.postermywall.com for the Halloween posters.

A collage of some of the posters I made

Evaluation
The first poster took me a lot more time than I expected, because I wanted everything to "fit" and be nice, but as soon as I realized how everything works and goes together, I started enjoying it a lot more and it took a lot less time. The posters take a lot of effort to make, because it is not just about putting plain text on blank paper, but actually layering and matching colors together. I learned a new skill that I will definitely use in the future.

Goals
- Learn a new skill as fast as possible (poster making)
- Improve computer skills
- Make different, creative posters that will catch everyone's attentions

CAS outcomes
- Development of new skills
- Plan and initiate in activities
- Increased their awareness of their strengths and areas for growth

Making Valentines Day Cards and Posters

Humanitarian Club
Plan
Even though I was not involved with the baking and organizing for Valentine's day humanitarian club event, we were all appointed to make Valentine's day cards. We were supposed to make around 10 of them, varying in sizes and shapes. Since the day it was due I knew I had a multitude of homework and would not have time, I decided to make them early.
Also, I volunteered to create posters that we could put up around the school, since I find them fun to make.

Evaluation
The Cards took me a lot more time than I expected, but I managed, since I split my work and did them over two days. Also, it was harder than I thought it would be, since I had to be creative and actually think of ideas that would not be repetitive, so each card would be unique.

Time management proved to be helpful since there were a lot of requests and adjustments I made around the posters, this I spent a lot of my time working on them. After I sent the first poster that I made, I thought it was complete, so I deleted the document with it and saved it only as a PDF. When I saw the email that I needed to make changes, I had to remake the entire poster, since it was not saved. There were around 5 adjustments that I had to make to get the final copy approved by the teachers. The posters I made
The cards I made
Goals
- Divide my time so I can make aesthetically pleasing cards
- Make cards with different motifs
- Create a poster with the correct info. and formatting

CAS outcomes
- Developing new skills (how to make cards)
- Showing perseverance and commitment (spend time on each of the cards and posters - enough time to make them precise)

Time Commitment
2 hours

 French - Extra Language

Plan

I have been taking french after school for about 1 year, however I decided to take on the challenge and have the goal of taking the IB French ab initio test, even though I do not have the capacity to be in the class in school.
My schedule will have to be arranged in order for me to have at minimum 3 hours of French every week. It is important to me to still continue with German once a week, so I made the decision to spend my Saturdays taking French class.

Goals
- Succeed at learning all the material required
- Commit to lessons during the weekends
- Improve my French - especially speaking

CAS outcomes
- Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth
- Undertaking new challenges
- Showing perseverance and commitment
- Developing new skills

Reflection/Evaluation
I believe taking intensive French classes helped me improve my French as well as allowed me to gain the experience of going to a summer camp in the South of France. There, I not only improved my speaking, I also gained new friends and experiences. I increased the ability to speak, read, and write in French, which was, at times, challenging to manage with my other schoolwork; however, I am glad I managed to organize my time well. Although I learned all the material for IB French, it was suggested to me that I should only take 6 subjects in the IB programme, thus I took the DELF test instead.

Time Commitment
3 hours per week

Spook Night Decorating and Organising

Plan
As part of Student Council, we decided to have a Halloween celebration for the Secnodary class. I signed up to do the decorating and planning of the event, as it is something that I find interesting and may do Event organising in the future as a career. We are planning on arranging the simple dance room into a cool room where students can go and enjoy some food as well as play games etc. It will be hard to manage, as there is limited space as well as time and financial resources, but I believe it will be a fun change from the ordinary life and parties at QSIB.
Altough, in order for me to do a good job at the event, I will have to find time, which is hard to do as a year 2 IB student and senior. However, thankfully, the other students will be helping as well.

Reflection/Evaluation
The spook night was a success!
Although we had some difficulty managing the organization of the room, we successfully completed everything before the students arrived.
It was a learning experience for me, as I have never been in charge of the decoration committee, however, I now understand the requirements and time management more. Also, the fact that we worked in a group collaboratively really helped, as I assigned jobs to everyone, which helped with time management.
I believe I fulfilled all the goals, as students who came said the party was great, as well as nicely decorated and the space was enjoyable. Also, we finished everything on time and due to the participation of the whole group, I was able to continue with my work in class as well as outside of the classroom.

Goals
- Manage the decoration group well.
- Create a nice space for the students to enjoy the party.
- Balance the decorating along with my other commitments.

CAS outcomes
Working collaboratively with others (Group work with student council members)
- Undertaking new challenges (Decoration commitiee)
- Developing new skills (increased expertise in events management)

Pancakes With Santa  - Cookie Decorating

Plan
I plan on helping out with the pancakes with santa event that QSI organises, even though it occurs on the same day as our student-organised event Stuzkova. I have made this decision because I am part of student council, so I know it is an important fundraiser for our organisation. We want as many people to come as we can, as it will make revenue, which we can then use for activities for older students. I plan to manage my time effectively, so I can manage with helping organise both events.

Goals
- Be able to manage Stuzkova and Pancaked with Santa
- Make sure everything goes according to plan
- Make sure the kids and the parents are enjoying themselves

CAS Outcomes
Working collaboratively with others (kids, students, and student council)
Planned and initiated activities

Reflection/Evaluation
The turnout at the event was even better than we had expected, as it brought out more people than previous years. Helping with cookie decorating was difficult, as the kids often became uncontrollable and were hard to manage, however Danko (the student helping wtih cookie decorating) and I were able to keep the kids entertained.
Altough I was worried with managing Stuzkova as well, things went smoothly, as I was allowed to leave the event a few mintues before it was done in order to get ready.

Stuzkova Organisation

Plan
As most of our senior class is Slovak, we all agreed that we should hold a traditional Stuzkova celebration, where we invite teachers and parents to celebrate the finalisation of our high school experience with us.
I assume it will be hard to organise the event, as many people have varying (and sometimes opposing) views, however, I believe we can work through our differences and have a great Stuzkova ceremony.
As I am planning on further pursuing event organization and have organized multiple events for school and outside of school as well, I want to help with the organization as much as I am needed and as much as I can due to it being a student organized event.
I will also be helping with the MC position during the ceremony.

Goals
- Successfully host and find a place for Stuzkova
- Work well with the group of people organizing the ceremony
- Make sure everyone is satisfied with the result of the night
- Organise the programme as well as the outline for the night

CAS Outcomes
Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth (collaboration)
Planned and initiated activities (Stuzkova)
Showing perseverance and commitment (Managing schoolwork as well as planning Stuzkova)
Developing new skills (Increased expertise in an already established area - event planning)

Reflection/Evaluation
Although it was quite difficult to manage everyone as well as settle on ideas that everybody liked, in the end, the ceremony turned out to be very pleasant, as well as entertaining for the invited guests. I believe all the organisators' work paid off, as we not only accomplished the goal of having the first ever evening Stuzkova ceremony in QSIB, the organization brought the senior class closer together. I believe that collaborating with people I did not necessarily talk to on a daily basis, or that I was not close to prior, helped me understand their points of view.
We had faced many challenges along the way, as we became aware of obstacles such as: the time limitations, conflict of opinion, and our own restrictions and other commitments within our schoolwork. As we had to manage getting prepared for the IB exams in May, I had to devote much of my otherwise "free time" in order not to be behind school work. This event, however, has shown me, that in the future I really do want to work with events organisation and communicate and collaborate on innovative ideas with others.
