HOUSE

Arm Wrestling

Plan
At one of our first house meetings, our house decided to start fundraising in a small, but creative way. We wanted to test out something different than just having a donation box at smart places, so we brainstormed and came up with arm wrestling "battles". There were two volunteers from our house, which others would pay 1 euro to go against. If they win, they get their euro back, but if they lose we keep it, and give them candy. We decided that we should promote it first, so for a week it was in the morning announcements, and we made a poster as well.

Reflection/Evaluation
I think the event was successful, a big crowd gathered around us. Even though we didn't make a huge amount of money (15 euro), it was a good start. Sarah, one of the house leaders was helpful and donated some candy which was great and a good motivation for the members. The activity wasn't that well planned because we were all hurrying and trying to find the people from our group the others should go against. However, it turned out to be successful and a good addition to our normal lunch routine. We did this 5 times throughout November and December, but we stopped and decided to take a break for a while with arm wrestling because we want to keep it more "exclusive" and not something reocurring every week.

Christmas Baking (and selling)
Plan
Since Christmas was coming up, we decided to have a twist on the ordinary bake sale, and decided to have a Christmas themed one. The Christmas cookies/baked goods would be provided by our house and people could buy them for a reasonable price during break and lunch.

Reflection/Evaluation
The preparation for the bake sale was very hectic and time-consuming for me because at the end I ended up baking 4 types of cookies/cakes/treats due to the fact at the last minute, some people from our house said that they were unable to bring the goods they were supposed to. So, I realized that our planning wasn't as amazing as we would have hoped. Since I was worried that we would have nothing to sell, after my French class (ends at 6 PM) I went to the supermarket and bought baking supplies. It was a challenge for me to complete all of the different kinds of baked goods, but in the end, I baked all of the things I wanted to. I started at 7 and stopped at around 11, which was probably the most time I ever spent in the kitchen in a day.
The next morning, we sold most of the baked goods during break, and we were all feeling proud of what we did. There were around 4 tables set up with many variations of bought or homemade "Christmas baked goods" that people from our house (but mainly the house leaders) brought. We sold the remaining pieces during lunch for a special price and ended up with a small amount leftover, so we decided to share it with the teachers.
All in all, it was a good fundraising technique, because we made around 70 euro, which is a very good start.

                         Workstation at Pancakes with Santa

Plan
We decided to educate smaller kids on the situation of the kids in poverty-stricken countries by providing two activities (snowmen making and painting) to the kids. I came up with the idea so I bought the supplies.

Reflection/Evaluation
I am proud of the activity and how the day went because there were always kids at our table that were enjoying our activity. However, I found the fact that I was the one that had to plan what to do, buy the supplies, organize meetings where only one other house leader turned up, and convince the humanitarian club (that I am a part of) that our activity would benefit them and the day. Even though our plan was to raise money, we were unable to do it due to the fact that the parents already paid the entrance fee that would go to charity. But, we were able to educate the kids. I also made the posters for the activity that would catch others attention as well as inform them. Global health is an important subject that I think is fitting to the humanitarian club and their cause.

Making a Donation Website

Plan
I plan to create a donation website, so more people (even friends or families of students/people related to the school) can donate to our charity. This will broaden our range of people and raise awareness. Also, we can increase our target sum of money we want to raise.

Reflection/Evaluation
Making the website was easier than we expected since the Feed The Children organization had their own site where people could make a page about them. Since the money will go directly to them, we do not have to go through the hassle of sending the money to our bank account and later sending it to the organization.
The fact that I added information about us and the organization, shows awareness of our global issue which is important for the donors to know. If I were them, I would like to know where my money goes to.
It is a good addition that we all shared it on Facebook with our friends, and some of them donated-because even 5 dollars help.
I like the idea of having the website, but it took some work. It would be beneficial if my other house leaders could help a little more than they are, because it takes a lot of work to keep being engaged in House with everything else that is going on in school.

House 2017/2018

Anti Bullying Presentation

Plan
We decided that this year our HOUSE project would be focused on anti-bullying awareness, which leads to us deciding to first educate our own group on what bullying is and some different group work exercises. We decided as a group to create the presentation that would be around 10 minutes long, and then present it to the group of kids in our HOUSE.
The goal of the presentation
1. show videos = what is bullying
2. Determine = ideas for advertising anti-bullying tactics
3. Anti-bullying week ideas
4. Teamwork activities
5. Fundraising ideas
6. Future plans

Goals
- Educate the house members on . the importance of anti-bullying campaigns
- Work with my group to research bullying and statistics
- Make the house members research the activities we could do

CAS Outcomes
- Engaged with issues of global importance (bullying is a very important topic discussed across the world)
- Working collaboratively with others (My house group)
- Planned and initiated activities (create presentation and set goals)
- Undertaking new challenges (researching bullying as well as presenting in front of a varying age crowd)

Reflection/Evaluation
I think the house meeting went well, however, my house group had minimal participation in the creation of the presentation as well as in the presenting itself. Although I have stated to them multiple times, that they should participate and we should work collaboratively, they decided to not follow through with things they committed to. For example, we had 3 empty slides.
Explaining what is bullying was proven to be easy, as the group understood the video and were also able to state a few examples of historical bullies and heroes.
I believe that what I committed to, which was creating the structure of the presentation as well as thinking of multiple "educating" and raising awareness ideas, was presented and understood. Although I found it challenging to present the presentation with my group, I believe that it went well and we used all 45 minutes of our time effectively.
I hope that in the future, we will be able to work collaboratively as a house group and that my group will take house more seriously.

Bullying awareness - Poster

Plan
I saw a poster on Pinterest that I thought would be interesting and would catch others' attention while walking the hallways of QSIB, so I proposed we create a fun activity where we would first print out copies of famous "heroes" from history, TV, and movies, as well as print famous "bullies" from history, TV, and movies. We would then show our house group the person, and they would have to identify them and say whether they were a bully or a hero. After finishing the activity, we would create a very large poster, where we would outline a person's body and split it into two parts.
This is the original idea
I believe that asking the question of "Which side of history do you want to be on" is effective in making the people that see the poster think about themselves and what the people on the poster represent.

Goals
- make others think about the concept
- work as a group to accomplish the final goal of making the poster presentable and visually appealing

CAS Outcomes
Planned and initiated activities
Working collaboratively with others
Engaged with issues of global importance

Reflection/Evaluation
The first week the poster was on the wall, I saw people (students as well as parents and faculty) stopping and observing who is where, as well as conversing about who is who. As we put different people on the poster - some real heroes, while some fictional ones from movies, I believe that everyone who saw the poster knew at least one of the people on the poster. I think that the question that we put on the poster stuck with the students, as the familiarity of the characters was 'stuck' in their heads.

Be a Hero Week

Our plan for the week

Plan

In order to spread the anti bullying message, we have decided to set up a "Be a Hero Week" that would be used as a way to increase awareness of a global issue. In order for everything to go well, our group needs to work together and plan each activity. Each day, we will have a different announcement, as well as some sort of activity for a portion of the schoool.

Goals

- Spread the message of being a hero around
QSIB.

CAS Outcomes
- Engaged with issues of global importance

Anti Bullying word search we used
- Working collaboratively with others
Reflection/Evaluation
Although the week did not go exactly as we planned, we heard different acknowledgements from teachers about them incorporating the message of being a hero into the material discussed with kids. We had daily announcements about different types of bullying, however, we are still planning on continuing with the plan of having announcements and reminders for the student body. The anti-bullying word search we gave out to each student was a hit, as we engaged kids with the issue in a more subtle way (than doing simply announcements and statistics) as they took it as an activity and fun game. Although it was a game, the words that the students were searching for to win a prize were words that related to the steps one needs to do in order to eliminate bullying.
We also had a McDonald's french fries sale that sold out in its first five minutes. From the money, we are planning on paying for an Anti bullying app, however, if the plan does not work, we will come up with something else that would spread the message of being a hero. Also, due to confusions in time scheduling, we have decided to do one of our activities, putting post it notes with compliments on each locker (or to each student), in the following weeks. Alltogether, I believe that the message about the importance of being a hero was successfully spread, although more needs to be done.
